At MIDCARDS, we are big fans of the art on MTG cards. So much so, a big feature of our Instagram content is matching the cards with nail art.

After each month we will gather together our matches in a blog post, with a short explanation of how we would use each card in a Commander deck.

Brain in a Jar

Why use it in a Commander deck?

An artifact on which to accumulate charge counters.

Pay 1 and tap to put a charge counter on it. Then count the charge counters and check your hand… You may cast an instant or sorcery without paying its mana cost if that cost is equal to the number of charge counters.

Too many charge counters? Pay 3 and tap to remove X counters and then scry that many!

Use in spellslinger decks.

Voidslime

Why use it in a Commander deck?

An instant to counter target spell, activated ability or triggered ability.

Use in decks with Green/Blue.

Firecannon Blast

Why use it in a Commander deck?

A sorcery that deals damage to a creature.

3 damage or wait until after you’ve attacked with a creature to do 6 damage instead.

Use in burn decks.

Rampaging Spiketail

Why use it in a Commander deck?

A 5/6 dinosaur giving support! A buff and indestructible for another creature until end of turn.

The option to Swampcycle for 2 while considering your options may also come in handy if land is an issue.

Use in decks with Black.

Nightwhorl Hermit

Why use it in a Commander deck?

A creature with vigilance is always useful and this 1/4 comes with more…

Reach the graveyard threshold and it gets a little buff and can’t be blocked!

Use in ninjutsu decks with Blue.

Winter Blast

Why use it in a Commander deck?

An X spell to use on your turn to tap down potential blockers.

If any of those are flying creatures, 2 damage is coming their way - possibly enough to remove them from the board.

Use in decks with Green.

Ponder

Why use it in a Commander deck?

A staple sorcery to get some card advantage.

Don’t like what you see in the first three? Shuffle and take a chance on what is drawn next.

Use in decks with Blue.

Sorin the Mirthless

Why use it in a Commander deck?

A versatile planeswalker that starts on 4 loyalty.

Add 1 for possible draw at a life cost. Add 2 for a token. Or minus 7 for targeted damage and life gain.

Use in Vampire decks with Black.

Celestial Mantle

Why use it in a Commander deck?

An enchantment that not only gives a buff, but gives its controller a life increase too.

Use in life gain decks with White.

Lotus Petal

Why use it in a Commander deck?

An artifact to sacrifice for one mana.

Any colour - for zero cost.

Get it out of your graveyard for even more value!

Use in any deck.
